![]() If it's a dumb probe, there's the risk of a species subverting it (let's move our industries deep underground and alter our atmosphere to hide technosignatures) and if it's a smart probe or thinking critter, there's a risk of it turning against you. Assuming you don't have FTL, the probes or astronauts are going to have to run unsupervised for their mission, which may be billions of years. The entire idea is extremely dangerous to your civilization.But if that's the case, where your region of space may contain a civilization capable of matching yours but you don't know who or where: genocide is a really poor survival strategy to begin with. ![]() The only reason why you would want probes is because they're harder to detect, which you'd only care about if you are concerned that your bubble of space-time contains a civilization that isn't hostile to you currently but has someone robust enough to survive.
